Bush's Gifts From World Leaders Include Statues, Guns
June 15 (Bloomberg) -- Looking for the perfect present for the leader of the free world?
How about a personal survival guide, a sculpture of Hercules, scented candles, 19th century handguns, a Moby Dick watch or gold cuff links depicting the Arabic symbols of good luck and health. Those were among the gifts from world leaders to President George W. Bush and other members of his administration in 2004.
With the U.S. at war in Iraq and engaged in a global battle against terrorists, Bush received ''The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook'' and a DVD of the musical ''Singing in the Rain'' from the sultan of Brunei. The vice president of China gave his U.S. counterpart, Vice President Dick Cheney, an out- of-print copy of Sun Tzu's ''The Art of War,'' valued at $3,600.
The State Department's Office of Protocol published the catalogue of gifts to U.S. government officials in the Federal Register today.
Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi gave Bush an $8,500 marble stature of Hercules, the athletic son of Zeus in Greek mythology, and the Moby Dick watch with an alligator band. Former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's gift in April 2004 was a protective vest worn by rodeo cowboys, embroidered with American and Canadian flags.
Jordan's King Abdullah and Queen Rania went for a softer touch in December 2004 with their gift of myrtle-flower scented candles. Abdullah also presented Bush with a circa-1884 Colt revolver pistol and 10 other vintage firearms the White House valued at $12,000. Separately, Abdullah bestowed on Bush a Dakota Arms sniper rifle with an eight-inch scope worth $10,000.
Aroma Therapy and Oils
Abdullah and the queen also decided an aroma therapy set and assorted olive oils would befit Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Value: $380 and $110 respectively.
Bush, who doesn't drink alcohol, got 12 bottles of dry red wine from the Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia; a case- and-a-half of Algerian reds in June 2004 and another case in October 2004 from Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika; and six bottles from the president of Tunisia. Those items were ''handled pursuant to Secret Service policy,'' according to the filing.
From French President Jacques Chirac, Bush received a wooden Lalique cigar humidor valued at $2,895. Chirac also gave Bush a $1,500, 1850 edition of Alexis de Tocqueville's ''Democracy in America,'' written in French. Chirac's wife, Bernadette, gave First Lady Laura Bush a Chanel purse worth $1,150.
For the Fed
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan was the recipient of a commemorative gold coin valued at $750 from Mugur Isarescu, governor of Romania's central bank. Ben Bernanke, Greenspan's successor who was a Fed governor in 2004, got a $375 sculpture from Chen Yuan, governor of the China Development Bank.
Kazakhstan's ambassador to the U.S. and his wife gave Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman a dark green velvet robe, stitched with the emblem of the oil-rich former Soviet republic.
The most expensive gift disclosed was given to former Secretary of State Colin Powell by the Saudi Arabian government: a $24,500 set of women's jewelry including an 18-carat white gold Bulgari necklace set with 64 round diamonds totaling 6.4 carats. The jewelry is being transferred to the General Services Administration, according to the Federal Register. Many of the other items were sent to government archives.
Some recipients kept their gifts: Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife, kept a silver rosary with mother-of-pearl beads that was blessed by the late Pope John Paul II. The beads were valued at about $75.
The most common reason U.S. officials gave for accepting the gifts: ''Non-acceptance would cause embarrassment to donor and U.S. government.''
Federal law allows an official to keep a gift worth less than a minimum value, currently $305. Gifts above that value are considered made to the agency, not the employee; the employee does have the option of purchasing the gift. Public sales of any gifts require the approval of the State Department.
The Federal Register filing was highlighted earlier today by the Web site The Smoking Gun.

UN AMBIGUO RITO DELLA POLITICA TONY: NON VI SVELO LA MARCA DI DUE OROLOGI RICEVUTI DAL CAVALIERE
E Blair fu crocifisso per un dono di Silvio

Il dono è una variante (minore) del «perdono», si dona per perdonare, e soprattutto essere perdonati, accettati. Il dono è cioè connesso alla «colpa», all’«appartenenza», al concetto di «clan». È un rito. Ieri l’Independent ha raccontato che Tony Blair s’è rifiutato di rivelare la marca di due orologi ricevuti in dono da Silvio Berlusconi. Un deputato conservatore inglese aveva scritto al premier chiedendogli conto dei due orologi ricevuti perché, secondo il codice di condotta ministeriale inglese, un primo ministro non può accettare doni di valore superiore a cento sterline (140 euro). Se il dono vale di più, il ministro può acquistarlo a un prezzo stabilito dall’ufficio di gabinetto.
In effetti Blair e signora hanno in questi anni ricevuto, scrive l’Independent, qualche pensierino dal Cavaliere, diciotto orologi, quattro collane, due braccialetti, due set di anelli, un orologio da tavolo, una borsa da palestra. Ma hanno correttamente deciso di tenersi solo due orologi del 2004, comprandoli per 175 sterline ciascuno (245 euro). Possibile, si domanda l’occhiuto conservatore, che Silvio regali a Tony un orologio così scarso? Il sospetto è che Blair abbia violato il codice comprando, a 175 sterline, un oggetto che ne vale molte di più.
Ora, il triangolo Berlusconi-dono-orologi è abbastanza sintomatico degli anni recenti della vita pubblica all’italiana. Lui sostiene di non avere al polso alcun orologio costoso, né di farne la raccolta: «Ne porto da 14 anni uno che regalai a mio padre con i primi guadagni, della ditta Nileg che non esiste nemmeno più. Prima di morire me lo ridiede e sono molto affezionato a quest’oggetto. Sfido chiunque a trovarmi con un altro orologio». Tuttavia Newsweek nel 2005 citò una malevola battuta di Prodi circa un prezioso cronografo da tredicimila euro posseduto dal Cavaliere; e in ambienti berlusconiani si arrivò a spiegare che quel pezzo avrebbe potuto essere un dono a Vladimir Putin, di cui è grande amico.
E il premier porterà certo un vecchio Nileg, ma ama in modo particolare due marche, il ripetizione minuti Patek Philippe e anche certi antichi, raffinati Vacheron Constantin. Del resto in fatto di orologi è generoso con gli altri almeno quanto con se stesso. A Natale del ‘93 regalò sei cravatte di Marinella ai deputati, bracciali alle deputate. Ai ministri furono regalati orologi di marca Wyler Vetta ispirati a Moby Dick, prezzo 2400 euro; in aggiunta, schermi ultrapiatti al plasma. L’anno successivo consegnò di sua mano un orologio Omega a tutti i senatori, parure di orecchini più spilla per le senatrici. Quell’anno, per i 180 deputati di Forza Italia s’inventò un simpatico tapis roulant, marca Tecnogym, prosaicamente valutato intorno ai quattromila euro, ma anche allora ci aggiunse un orologio - Omega o Longines - per gli uomini, e una collana con orecchini di perle per le donne. In totale, fu sommariamente stimato, ogni onorevole si portava a casa un dono da 6500 euro.
Si può credere che un dono a Blair possa essere da meno del fucile da caccia Beretta con dedica donato all’amico Putin? Del quadro tardo impressionista stile Teomondo Scrofalo donato a Gianni Letta per i suoi settant’anni? O perfino dell’introvabile orologio del Milan in serie limitata che Silvio donò all’estasiato Bertinotti, direttamente in tv? Si può; ma è difficile. Come è improbabile che i due orologi blairiani valgano meno dell’unico dono semi-sfigato fatto a memoria d’uomo dal premier, una macchinetta del caffè al povero Giuseppe Ajala, Natale del 1993. E alla fine si è pure rotta.
