    STORIA DELLA CANZONE:
    padre Joseph Mohr della chiesa di St. Nicholas di Oberndorf, Austria, compose il poema “Stille nacht, heilige nacht” nel 1816 (altre fonti sostengono 1816 o 1819) dopo aver visitato la casa di un boscaiolo avendo riscontrato molte rassomiglianze fra l’imminente nascita del figlio del povero boscaiolo ed il Bambino Gesù.
    Padre Mohr chiese all’organista Franz Gruber di scrivere la musica per il poema che venne cantato nella messa di mezzanotte con accompagnamento di chitarra poiché l’organo si era rotto.
    “Stille nacht, heilige nacht” fu tradotta in inglese dal Reverendo John Freeman Young nel 1863.
    “Silent night” (in Italia nota come “Astro del ciel”) venne registrata numerosissime volte da parecchi cantanti nel corso degli anni.
    Una delle prime registrazioni fu quella di Betsy Schot nel 1901(Zon-O-Phone). Altre registrazioni sono quelle dell’Haydn Quartet (Victor 4511) nel 1905, Bing Crosby And The John Scott Trotter Orchestra (8 giugno 1942; Decca 621) il quale singolo vendette oltre 30 milioni di copie appaiato ad “Adeste fideles”, Sister Rosetta Tharpe nel 1949 (Decca 48119), Mahalia Jackson nel 1962 col titolo di “Silent night, holy night” (Apollo 750).
